The Need for a Trauma-Informed Approach to Female Incarceration
Given the growing number of female prisoners, our incarceration system needs to focus more on women’s needs.
Vivian Nixon is the Executive Director of College & Community Fellowship, a New York based non-profit organization that helps formerly incarcerated women earn a higher education. She is also the Executive Director of the Education from the Inside Out Coalition, which is a non-partisan group that works to remove barriers to higher education for individuals with criminal justice system involvement. A formerly incarcerated woman who was also a participant of College & Community Fellowship, Ms. Nixon has drawn upon her experiences to improve the futures of individuals with criminal justice involvement.
